A gem hidden in the valley, a proper hikers bar serves real ale. Ideal after a hard day up the hills.

We didn't stay but walked from the hotel. They have a little car park where it is £3 to park all day which is donated to the air ambulance (mountain rescue) great charity and its cheaper than the national trust car park. The pub is really traditional but great selection of beers. The food looked good and the hotel looked nice as well.

Have only used the walkers bar area. After a long walk up the mountains, which are accessible pretty much from the door via Stool End Farm or from the path at the rear of the hotel, it is a welcome stop for a pint and some warming soup. There is pretty much always a fire going in the large fireplace during the winter months where you can defrost, dry out and relax. It is in a good location for quite a few walks including Scafell Pike however, depending on the route it can be a 2 mile walk into the valley to get to the beginning of the ascent. Would give it 5 stars but beer is a little pricey in my opinion although given its location that isn't altogether unexpected. Would definitely recommend stopping there if you're in the area although I can't comment on the hotel side as I haven't stayed there.
